It's one of the most popular clothing materials. The world collects about 20 million tons of cotton annually, which can cover about 40 per cent of the world ' s natural fibre needs. All the dignity of the materials is clear: the tissues are solid, enduring, highly thermally protected by the full fibre structure, and its porous structure guarantees good air exchange. In other words, the perfect material for a man. But not perfect for nature.
How harmful is the production of conventional cotton
Excessive water consumption
The production of conventional cotton requires a large amount of water. According to the World Wildlife Fund, WWF uses 7,000 to 2,9000 litres of water to produce one kilo of raw materials. Some experts believe that the disproportionate exploitation of land and water under cotton cultivation was the main cause of the disappearance of the Aral Sea.
Use of harmful chemicals
In the production of cotton, a large number of different chemicals, such as pesticides, insecticides, chemical fertilizers, heavy metals, chemical painters, bleachers and formaldehydes, are being produced. Approximately 10 per cent of all pesticides used in the world and about 25 per cent of all insecticides are in the cotton fields. The amount of pesticides and herbicides used is only increasing every year, as the number of insects that are sustainable increases. At the same time, the chemicals on cotton fields - orthosphates, trifluralin, toxafen, methamidophos and many others - are highly toxic. The chemicals used in cotton processing pollute soil, air and surface water.
